CURRENT TRENDS IN THE AREA OF COMPUTER GAMES

In the modern society, playing computer games is an integral part of the life of children and adolescents, but gaming is also highly popular among adults of various age groups. This is a very sought after phenomenon and people are willing to spend considerable amounts of money on entertainment in the form of state-of-the-art computer games and related gaming devices, various types of controls, and add-on technology. The driving force for developers and gaming product manufacturers is the players’ desire for new gaming experiences. In order to lure new supporters and maintain the existing gaming community, they constantly innovate their products, and thus try to outrival their competitors. At present, there are several developmental trends in the area of computer games. The present paper focuses on four selected trends that according to the authors set the direction of the development of the gaming industry. The first part describes the development of components with computing power for gaming devices. This includes microprocessors and reaching the limits of miniaturization in accordance with Moore’s law. The next part focuses on the trends of development of new gaming experiences using modern methods of controlling computer games and interactions with virtual environments. The third significant trend is the development of renowned brands and decreasing diversity in this area. The last section highlights the trend that is based on the preferences of computer game players. This includes a growing interest in computer games designed for mobile devices, which has risen significantly in recent years.
